Rincon de la Vieja Costa Rica

Location

Rincón de la Vieja Volcano is located approximately 40 km (25 miles) east of Liberia, in Costa Rica's Guanacaste province. It is easily accessible by road from either Liberia or the Playas del Coco area along the northern Pacific coast. The park’s main entrance is situated close to Hacienda Guachipelín, a well-known eco-lodge offering information, guide services, equipment rentals, and a variety of adventure activities.

Although the park is open year-round, the ideal time to visit is during the dry season, which runs from November to April, as the rainy season can make access more challenging.

History

Rincón de la Vieja is a stratovolcano that forms part of the Orosí volcanic system, situated within the Guanacaste mountain range. With an elevation of 1,916 meters (6,286 feet) above sea level, this volcano is notable for its irregular shape and multiple craters, distinguishing it from other Costa Rican volcanoes, which typically feature symmetrical cones. Some of its craters remain active to this day.

The volcano has a long history of volcanic activity, with frequent eruptions shaping the local landscape over millennia. Its most recent significant eruption occurred in 2011, after which the volcano has displayed moderate fumarolic activity. Although the eruptions have become less intense, Rincón de la Vieja remains an active volcano and is closely monitored by scientific agencies.
