Tenorio Volcano
A Scenic Haven in Costa Rica
Tenorio Volcano is a captivating and relatively unexplored gem in Costa Rica. Situated in the northern Guanacaste region, this volcano is renowned for its geothermal activity and breathtaking natural surroundings. The area offers a variety of ecotourism opportunities, with the standout attraction being the Rio Celeste. The river’s striking turquoise hue draws countless visitors annually, making it one of the country’s most unique natural wonders.

Location
Tenorio Volcano is situated in Tenorio Volcano National Park, located in the Guanacaste province, close to the Alajuela border. The park is approximately a 3-hour drive from San José and around 2 hours from Liberia, the nearest urban center. While some of the roads leading to the park are unpaved, they are generally in good condition and accessible for 4x4 vehicles.
Unlike other popular volcanoes in Costa Rica, Tenorio Volcano is less frequented, offering visitors a peaceful and serene natural setting, perfect for those seeking a more tranquil experience.
History
Tenorio Volcano is an active stratovolcano located within the Guanacaste Volcanic Range, one of Costa Rica's prominent mountain systems. While it has experienced intermittent eruptions, the volcano continues to exhibit geothermal activity, such as fumaroles and hot springs.
Reaching an elevation of 1,916 meters (6,286 feet) above sea level, Tenorio is thought to have formed roughly 1 million years ago, with volcanic activity ongoing through the ages. Among its most remarkable features are the several hot springs scattered around the area and the Celeste River, known for its striking turquoise color. This unique hue is the result of a chemical reaction between volcanic minerals and oxygen, creating a captivating visual display.
Rio Celeste: A One-of-a-Kind Natural Wonder
One of the highlights of Tenorio Volcano is the breathtaking Rio Celeste, a river known for its striking turquoise color, created by a unique combination of minerals such as calcium sulfate and aluminum sulfate. This remarkable phenomenon results in one of Costa Rica's most visually captivating landscapes.
As the river flows, its color shifts from light blue to emerald green, depending on the mineral concentration and environmental factors, offering a constantly changing spectacle. This stunning natural feature, along with the nearby lakes, has drawn both tourists and researchers from across the globe.
Visitors can explore the Rio Celeste through a network of trails that lead to the river, its waterfalls, and geothermal zones. The most popular route is the Rio Celeste Trail, which guides adventurers to must-see spots like the Hot Springs and the Rio Celeste Waterfall, a 30-meter (98-foot) cascade that plunges into a shimmering turquoise pool below.
